Although most people think of hypnosis as some esoteric or mystical phenomenon reserved for a select few, the truth is quite the opposite. Hypnosis is a natural mental state that everyone experiences—often multiple times a day, sometimes only for a split second—without even realizing it. It is not about losing control or surrendering your will to someone else; rather, it is about entering a state of focused attention and heightened receptivity, much like being deeply absorbed in a book, a movie, or a daydream.
In this state, the analytical part of the mind relaxes, allowing the subconscious—the part responsible for habits, beliefs, and emotional responses—to become more accessible. This is why, through what is known as an induction, a hypnotherapy session engages the state of hypnosis to intentionally guide a person in making meaningful changes, releasing old patterns, and adopting healthier ways of thinking and behaving.
Far from mysterious, it is a well-researched, evidence-based process that leverages the subconscious mind's capabilities.
A Clinical definition:
"Hypnosis is a natural yet heightened state of focused attention that bypasses the critical faculty—the analytical, conscious part of the mind—while maintaining selective thinking.
This creates an altered state of awareness, referred to as "Hypnosis."
Most experts believe we naturally enter an "altered state" approximately every 120 seconds. Therefore, the natural tendency to focus or engage in thoughts can unintentionally move us into the Altered State of Awareness, otherwise known as "Hypnosis."
In a hypnotherapy session, hypnosis is initiated through the use of inductions. While we naturally experience states of hypnosis several times a day, during a session, the hypnoidal state is intentionally induced. There are many types of inductions, but in each case, the client must choose to follow the hypnotherapist’s guidance. Once the altered state or hypnosis is achieved, targeted therapeutic techniques can be applied to help the client address and overcome their specific challenges. Our Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists use the most advanced therapeutic strategies to access the subconscious mind and facilitate positive, lasting changes in your life.
